Fenomena Misterius, Anak Penguin Ditemukan Bugil

TEMPO Interaktif, Seattle – Salah satu ciri khas penguin adalah tubuhnya yang berbalut bulu tebal berwarna hitam dan putih yang membuatnya tampak seperti mengenakan tuksedo. Namun sejumlah anak penguin di Atlantik Selatan kehilangan ciri tersebut, tak ada sehelai bulu pun tumbuh menutupi badannya.

Penemuan anak penguin bugil itu membuat para ilmuwan dari Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), University of Washington, Seattle, Amerika Serikat, dan sejumlah kelompok lingkungan lain berusaha memecahkan penyebab kondisi tersebut. Penguin bugil yang menderita gangguan tak berbulu itu ditemukan dalam koloni penguin di kedua sisi Atlantik Selatan dalam beberapa tahun terakhir.
“Gangguan hilangnya bulu itu bukan sesuatu yang lazim ditemukan pada sebagian besar spesies burung,” kata P. Dee Boersma, dari Wildlife Conservation Society dan University of Washington. “Kami harus melakukan studi lanjutan untuk mengetahui penyebab kelainan itu serta memeriksa apakah gangguan ini tersebar pada spesies penguin lain.”

Penyakit hilangnya bulu pada anak penguin itu pertama kali dideteksi di Cape Town, Afrika Selatan, pada 2006. Pada saat itu, peneliti dari Yayasan Afrika Selatan untuk Konservasi Burung Pantai (SANCCOB) mengobservasi gangguan tersebut untuk pertama kalinya pada penguin Afrika di sebuah pusat rehabilitasi.

Pada tahun itu, sekitar 59 persen anak penguin di fasilitas tersebut kehilangan bulu-bulu mereka, lalu diikuti 97 persen bayi penguin pada tahun berikutnya. Pada 2008, 20 persen penguin muda yang dirawat juga menunjukkan gangguan itu. Anak penguin yang menderita gangguan itu membutuhkan waktu lebih lama untuk tumbuh mencapai ukuran yang sesuai untuk dilepas kembali ke alam. Kelainan itu tak berlangsung lama. Pada akhirnya, anak penguin itu mulai menumbuhkan bulu baru.

Kelainan itu juga ditemukan pada anak penguin Magellan liar di pesisir Argentina pada 2007. Para ilmuwan juga mencatat bahwa, berbeda dengan anak penguin normal yang mencari naungan dari teriknya matahari siang, anak penguin gundul tetap berjemur. Selama studi, beberapa anak penguin penderita kelainan itu mati.

Selain tumbuh lebih lambat, anak penguin bugil itu lebih kecil dan ringan daripada anak penguin normal. Perbedaan itu terjadi karena peningkatan energi yang diperlukan untuk fungsi pengaturan panas akibat hilangnya insulasi mantel bulu. Para ilmuwan menduga penyebab hilangnya bulu itu adalah bakteri patogen, gangguan thyroid, serta ketidakseimbangan nutrisi atau genetika. “Munculnya gangguan itu pada populasi burung liar menunjukkan bahwa kelainan tersebut sesuatu yang baru,” kata Mariana Varese, dari WCS Amerika Latin dan Karibia.

Para ilmuwan berusaha keras menghentikan penyebaran gangguan ini. “Penguin telah menghadapi masalah polusi minyak dan variasi iklim,” kata Boersma. “Sangat penting kita berusaha mencegah penyakit ini, yang menambah daftar ancaman bagi penguin.”
